Hatena World Beginner's Guide

Hatena World is a place where you can maneuver a character you have drawn yourself and have conversations with anyone on the map of the world. Let us show you all the fun things you can do in Hatena World.

Basic Operation

Moving your character

Moving your character

Use your mouse to click on any point on the map you wish to go to, and your character will walk to that location. You can also use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move your character up, down, left, or right ( Left Up Down Right ). Press two arrow keys together to move your character diagonally (exsample: Down + Right ).

Hold the shift key down while pressing the arrow keys ( Shift + Left Up Down Right ), and your character will run and move around quickly.

Changing your viewpoint

To change your viewpoint, all you have to do is hold down the control key while pressing an arrow key. Hold down the control key and press the right or left arrow key to turn your character around ( Ctrl + Left Right ). Press the down arrow key while holding down the control key to zoom in to get your character's view ( Ctrl + Down ), and press the up arrow key to zoom out for a bird's eye view of the area ( Shift + Up ).

Enter a Username in the search field in the top left of your screen, and you can instantly move to where that person is.

Click on the Google logo at the bottom right of your screen to see the area where your character is standing on Google Maps.

Conversations

In Hatena World the chat window is open at all times. Type in what you want to say, then click on the Send button or press the enter key ( Enter ). Hold down the shift key and press the enter key to start a new line ( Shift + Enter ). Whatever you say will appear in a bubble over your character's head. Any text you enter plus those of the other people around you will be displayed in your chat window.

You can name each one of your chats by clicking on the pencil icon ( Edit ) on the top right of the chat window. You can use anything you like for the title of your chat, like the name of the person you met or the topic of your conversation. When you click on the title, a new window will open and you can see a log of the conversation.

Your chatting area

In Hatena World conversation areas are divided into boxes on the ground. All conversations in your area will be displayed in your chat window in chronological order. Conversations of other people near you but outside your conversation area will appear in a bubble over their characters, but will not appear in your chat window.

Accessing your chat history

Accessing your chat history

To access your chat history, after logging in, click on your Username at the top right of the page and it will take you to your User page (http://w.hatena.com/Username). On this page you can see a list of chats you have participated in the past, in order from the newest chat to the oldest. You can easily find any of your past chats on this page. You can also access other people's User pages by clicking on a person's character and selecting Chat History from the menu.

Editing your character

Draw your own character

In Hatena World you can draw your own characters. Click on the Edit Character link and a window will pop up where you can create your drawing. You can draw the front and back of your character by selecting tools like pencil, eraser, and the color fill bucket.

Edit Charcter Window

When you are done with your drawing, click on the Save button, and your drawing will be applied to your character. Your creation will be automatically saved in your character library, so you can easily restore any of your old drawings. Try creating different character drawings.

How to use the character edit window

Color PickerColor Picker
You can select the color you want when using the pen, line or color fill bucket tools.
Brush SizeBrush Size
You can select the width for use with the pen, line or eraser tools.
Pen ToolPen Tool
Use your mouse to draw lines freehand. The width of the line is determined by the selected brush size.
Eraser ToolEraser Tool
Use your mouse to select the area you want to erase. The width of the area is determined by the selected brush size.
Color Fill Bucket ToolColor Fill Bucket Tool
Use this tool to fill in a large area in a color you have picked.
Line ToolLine Tool
This tool lets you draw a straight line where you drag the curser using your mouse.
Eyedropper ToolEyedropper Tool
Use the eyedropper tool to copy a previously used color in your drawing.
Move ToolMove Tool
Click on and drag your drawing using the move tool. Parts of your drawing that go outside the frame will be deleted.
Vertex Positioning ToolVertex Positioning Tool
Select the positions that should move when walking, such as the head and the joints in the arms and legs. Make sure the positioning lines surround your entire picture.
MagnifierMagnifier
Click on the magnifier for an enlarged view of a selected area in your drawing. Click on the magnifier again to return to normal view.
Copy ButtonsCopy Buttons
Click on the top copy button to copy a mirror image of the front view of your drawing onto the rear view. Click on the bottom copy button to copy a mirror image of the rear view of your drawing onto the front view (Copy Buttons).

Your character library comes pre-loaded with a variety of characters you can choose from so if you do not want to create your own character, you can select from one of these. You can personalize your pre-loaded character by changing colors using the color fill tool, or just change the facial expression by altering the eyes or mouth.

Also, because your creations are automatically saved in your character library, you can easily restore or edit any of your old drawings.

Using other people's drawings for your character

To use someone else's drawing for your character, click on that character and select "Use this character" from the menu. Now you can apply that drawing to your own character.

Contacts list

Adding to your contacts list

To add someone to your contacts list, just click on a character in Hatena World and select �gAdd to my contacts list�h from the menu. Anyone can be added your contacts list and you do not need approval from that person to add them.

Icons of people added to your contacts list are displayed at the bottom of your screen. People who are offline will have translucent icons, while people who are online will have their icons displayed normally.

Available actions from your contacts list

Click on a contact and you can instantly go to where they are, or visit their User page by selecting it from the menu.

Go
You can instantly go to the location that person is.
View sample's conversations
A new window will open where you can view all of that person's past conversations.
Use this character
You can copy that person's current character as your own.
Remove from contacts list
Select this item to remove someone from your contacts list. You can always add somebody back to your list even after removing them.

Drawing a picture for a keyword

In Hatena World you can see names of places and buildings as keywords. These keywords have a pencil icon next to them, which when clicked on opens an editing window where you can draw a picture. You can draw a picture for a keyword in the same way as you draw a character. The front view of your picture is displayed on the left and the rear view of your picture is displayed on the right. Anybody can edit a picture, even if someone else drew it originally.

Retreiving an old drawing from your library

Just like the characters that you draw, your keyword drawings are saved in a library, so you can easily replace a new drawing with a previous one. To open the library, click on the Library link on the top right of the keyword editing window.
